My Strategies from Building a Franchise Powerhouse

Embracing the Entrepreneurial Spirit

Tired of the corporate grind?

Yearning for freedom and flexibility?

Trust me, I’ve been there.

Starting a business from scratch is challenging, but that’s exactly why I built Jim’s Group: to offer a path to ownership that’s rooted in support, structure, and real-world experience.

Overcoming the Odds with Franchising

Independent small businesses have a rough first year—90–95% fail.

But a franchise backed by a proven system? That changes everything.

Jim’s Mowing began as a part-time job in the 1970s, and today we have over 5,500 franchises across three countries.

My advice: buy into a system that works—don’t reinvent the wheel.

Lay Your Foundation with Research

Before diving in, do your homework.

Connect with current franchisees.

Ask them: What’s working? What’s not? If they won’t share contacts or experiences, walk away.

Real transparency is non-negotiable.

Choose a Business That Fits You

Don’t chase prestige—chase purpose.

Some of our most successful franchisees work in trades: tree lopping, fencing, and pest control

One of our tree guys charges $2,000 a day, and the start-up cost was under $20,000.

Find something you’re good at and passionate about—and lean into it.

Start Part-Time, Learn Quickly

I encourage new franchisees to start part-time.

Take our $1,000–$1,500 training, try it out, shadow others, and only commit when you’re ready.

Many who took the training didn’t sign up, and some even went on to build their own brands.

That kind of freedom is by design.

Overcome Fears with Preparation

Leaving a secure job is scary.

But if you spend time researching, training, and connecting—and really understand what’s ahead—you can transition with confidence.

It’s about informed courage.

Skilled Trades: Big Demand, Real Reward

Too many overlook the trades.

Yet there’s huge demand and incredible potential.

Skilled trade franchisees can earn huge day rates—and enjoy meaningful, hands-on work.

It’s a path too few consider, but one I firmly believe in.

Innovation: Preparing for the Future

Our franchise isn’t static.

I’m excited about upcoming tech investments—new software tools, smarter operations, and systems that make things easier for franchisees and customers.

We’re set to lead the next wave of service innovation.

My Core Takeaways
