My Journey: Chapter One of the Jim’s Book Series

My Life, My Legacy

My story began with a simple vision and an unshakeable commitment to doing things right.

As the founder of Jim’s Group—now one of the largest franchise networks in the southern hemisphere—I’ve built more than just a business.

I’ve built a legacy rooted in service, integrity, and empowerment.

The Jim’s Book series shares the real story behind that journey.

I open up about the critical moments, the early struggles, and the decisions that shaped the empire we’ve built today.

Chapter 1: How It All Began

Back in my university days at La Trobe, I was working toward a PhD in history.

To earn a little extra money, I started a part-time gardening business.

I had no idea at the time that this modest effort would spark something extraordinary.

In 1982, I invested just $24 to get started.

At first, I only intended to take on subcontractors.

But the business kept growing, and before long, I found myself focused on building and selling lawn mowing rounds.

Why I Turned to Franchising

The real turning point came in 1989.

That’s when I made the decision to franchise.

Why?

Because I genuinely cared about the people I worked with.

I saw franchising not just as a way to grow but as a way to help others succeed.

My number one concern was—and still is—the welfare of our franchisees and the ongoing improvement of customer service.

That mindset allowed me to scale the business without compromising on values.

I launched Jim’s Cleaning in 1994, and from there, the divisions multiplied.

Today, we offer more than 50+ services across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the UK.

Franchisees Come First

From the very beginning, I’ve believed that franchisee welfare is the key to success.

I’ve stayed hands-on and accessible, always ready to speak directly with a franchisee or a client who has a serious concern.

We’ve grown to more than 5,500 franchisees, with an annual turnover nearing $1 billion.

But the number I care about most is how many people feel supported and empowered in our system.

My Passion for Epigenetics

Beyond the business, I’ve kept a strong interest in research—especially in the field of epigenetics.

I’m funding a program that explores how epigenetic changes influence social behavior.

This work is a continuation of my PhD and aims to help treat mental illness and addiction.

Blending business and research isn’t typical, I know.

But I’ve always been curious.

I want to contribute in a way that could make a long-term difference, both scientifically and socially.

Local Expertise, Global Reach

Our franchisees are local experts.

That’s intentional.

It ensures every customer receives exceptional care, no matter the service.

With over 50+ different divisions, from mowing and cleaning to highly specialized trades, Jim’s Group has become a go-to for trusted service across the board.

Going Digital, Staying Connected

We’ve embraced digital platforms to connect, grow, and educate. Our presence on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube helps us stay close to both franchisees and customers.

Through our podcast, The JimsCast, we share advice, stories, and honest insights directly from me and our leadership team.

I also host weekly Facebook Live sessions where I respond to questions in real time.

It’s a practice I value deeply—it helps me stay grounded, informed, and engaged.

A Culture of Constant Improvement

If there’s one thing I’ve insisted on from the start, it’s continuous improvement.

Whether it’s customer service, internal processes, or franchisee support, we’re always pushing to be better.

Listening, adapting, and evolving—that’s how we’ve lasted, and that’s how we’ll continue to grow.

Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs

I started with almost nothing—just a lawn mower, a history degree, and a lot of grit.

But I had vision, and I stayed committed to my values.

If there’s one thing I’d pass on, it’s this: care deeply about the people around you. Build systems that serve, not just sell

Stay humble enough to keep learning.

My story isn’t just about business success.

It’s about building something meaningful.

I hope it inspires the next generation to believe they can do the same.
