From Gardener to $500 Million CEO: My Story

In today’s ever-evolving world of entrepreneurship, I know my story stands out as both unconventional and inspiring.

As the CEO of Jim’s Group—a franchise empire that grew from a humble gardening job into a network of over 5,500 franchises across Australia and New Zealand– my journey is a testament to what’s possible through grit, innovation, and an unwavering focus on service.

Where It All Started

In the 1980s, while studying for my PhD in history, I started working as a part-time gardener to make ends meet.

I quickly saw a gap in the market for reliable, affordable services and decided to launch a small business with just $24 in hand.

What began as a solo operation quickly grew, thanks to my dedication to quality and reputation for great service.

Realizing the growing demand, I made the decision to franchise.

That was the beginning of Jim’s Mowing—and the foundation of what would eventually become Jim’s Group.

Building Jim’s Group

Franchising changed everything.

I provided a proven system, hands-on support, and real-world training, empowering others to start their own businesses under the Jim’s banner.

Over time, we expanded far beyond lawn care.

Today, we include services like cleaning, pest control, dog washing, plumbing, and more.

But what hasn’t changed is our commitment to quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

What’s Driven My Success

There’s no single formula for success, but here’s what has kept me moving forward:

  • Passion and perseverance: I started this because I loved the work and wanted to serve people well. That’s never changed.
  • Adaptability: Markets shift. So I’ve learned to innovate quickly and seize new opportunities.
  • Franchisee support: I make sure our team has the tools and training they need. Their success is our success.
  • Company culture: Integrity and service aren’t just slogans—they’re the values we live by.

A Final Word

What began as a side hustle has become a legacy.

If my story teaches you anything, let it be this: with determination, a customer-first mindset, and the courage to keep learning, there are no limits to what you can build.
