The Humble Beginnings of a Business Titan
I started small—just $24 and some old gear back in 1982.
Armed with a Ph.D. in History, I set out not just to build a business, but to fund groundbreaking research in epigenetics and social behavior.
What began as a simple lawn-mowing job grew into an empire of over 5,500 franchises across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, bringing in around AUD $1 billion annually.
Overcoming the Odds
When I launched Jim’s Group, I faced overwhelming odds—most small service businesses fail within a year.
I knew I had to protect my franchisees.
That’s why I built a system offering training, support, and a proven path to success.
Today, about 88% of our franchisees are still standing after one year, far above the industry average.
Empowering Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Through my franchise model, people can start part-time, shadow a mentor, and ease into full-time entrepreneurship without losing their safety net.
I always say: lean in gradually—no need to jump headfirst into risk.
I encourage anyone interested to reach out to me directly or visit my team at jims.net.
Tackling the Housing Crisis
I’m deeply aware of how hard it is for young people to buy homes today.
What used to take three or four years’ income now takes seven or eight.
That’s why I founded Biohistory.org to dig into historical and policy reasons behind today’s challenges and help find real-world solutions.
Driving the Renewable Energy Transition
Sustainability matters to me personally and professionally.
I’ve installed solar panels on my home, office, and farm, and drive an electric vehicle—saving on fuel and reducing emissions.
That passion led me to launch Jim’s Energy, offering solar, batteries, and hot water systems to help our community embrace green energy.
My Core Beliefs and Lessons
- Start small, but think big. I began with $24, aiming for a purpose bigger than profit.
- Protect your people. I built a franchise system that empowers with support and training.
- Grow at your own pace. Part-time can be the bridge to full-time ownership.
- Fix big problems. I use our success to tackle societal issues—housing, energy, and mental health.
- Lead by example. I’m all in—from emails late at night to championing change in the boardroom.
That’s my story—from paying my dues to lifting hundreds of families into entrepreneurship.
Jim’s Group isn’t just a business—it’s a platform for lasting impact.
