The Secrets to Happiness: What I’ve Learned Along the Way

Finding Fulfillment Beyond Wealth and Status

In a world where people often measure success by wealth and social standing, I’ve discovered that true happiness comes from much deeper sources.

Yes, I’ve built one of the largest franchise businesses in the Southern Hemisphere with over 5,500 franchisees, but my sense of joy and fulfillment isn’t tied to money or titles.

What really brings me happiness?

It’s my faith, my family, a strong sense of purpose, and my commitment to helping others.

Why Money Isn’t the Answer

Money can bring happiness, up to a point.

In my experience, once you’re earning around $80,000 a year, the impact of earning more on your day-to-day happiness is marginal.

I’ve seen this firsthand.

I had a friend who was immensely wealthy, yet he took his own life because he felt empty and without purpose.

That tragedy reminded me that material success, by itself, doesn’t satisfy the soul.

The Joy of Giving

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that giving brings far more happiness than accumulating.

The best way I’ve ever spent money has been by giving it away.

I’m inspired by the work of the Gates Foundation.

They look for the most effective ways to do good, not just the ones that pull at your heartstrings.

I admire that practical, thoughtful approach to philanthropy.

Personally, I tithe 10% of my income to my church, and I’ve also invested in my own research into the epigenetics of social behavior—research I believe can help address mental health and addiction issues.

Relationships and Community Matter Most

My faith and my relationships give my life meaning.

I’ve been married for 18 years to a woman I consider the best in the world.

She’s my partner in every sense of the word, and our relationship brings me more joy than any professional achievement.

I also find strength and community through my church and a group of close friends—men I meet with every couple of weeks.

We share, we pray, and we support each other.

That sense of belonging is incredibly powerful.

Living with Purpose

I’ve learned that happiness is tied to purpose.

Chasing money for its own sake is a mistake.

It’s much more fulfilling to do work you believe in—work that aligns with your values and gives you time and space to focus on what truly matters.

For me, that purpose comes from running Jim’s Group in a way that helps people build better lives.

It comes from my research and from being a good husband and father.

As I often say, “No other success can compensate for failure in the home.”

That principle guides how I live.

The Role of Fitness and Health

I also make health and fitness a priority.

Exercise is one of the most powerful mood boosters I know.

I try to get in at least 30 minutes of vigorous exercise daily—running, squash, or working on my farm.

While I have a weakness for chocolate and Nutella, I do my best to eat well too.

Physical well-being supports my mental and emotional resilience.

It’s an essential part of my happiness formula.

My Takeaways on a Fulfilling Life

If you asked me how to live a happy life, here’s what I’d tell you:

  • Be grateful. Take time to appreciate the people and blessings in your life.
  • Give back. Help others. It brings more joy than spending money on yourself.
  • Invest in relationships. Deep, meaningful connections are life’s greatest treasures.
  • Live with purpose. Do work that matters to you and aligns with your values.
  • Stay active. A healthy body supports a healthy mind and heart.

These principles have helped me live a deeply fulfilling life.

I hope they help you too.

True happiness, in my view, doesn’t come from what you own—but from how you live, who you love, and what you give.
